We are open to submissions which relate to PERSON FIRST IN AN IDENTITY FIRST WORLD.

How are you labeled? “Disabled”? “On the spectrum”? “Nonbinary”? “POC”? “Marginalized”? How do you wish you were labeled? “Amazing cook”? “Proficient in 12 languages”? “Expert at Call of Cthulhu”? The need to label, classify, and pigeonhole human beings is as old as humans themselves, and always comes down to the same dichotomy: “us” and “them.” Even at their most well-meaning, labels are a way of othering those not like us, and once someone has been put in the THEM group, it can be difficult to pull them back to US.

We’re looking for poetry and stories of and by those who have been relegated to “them” status by virtue of a label that (validly) places them in a particular group. But we don’t want work related to how or why that group is special, invalid, irrelevant, etc. What we want is stories that explore the intersectionality of people in those groups. Nonbinary skydivers. Black equestrians. Wheelchair-using geocachers. Trans chefs. We want stories of and by people in othered communities, but we don’t want their label to be the story.

We are NOT accepting inspiration porn, jeremiads about the poor treatment of marginalized groups, or “disability as superpower” stories. There’s plenty of that stuff elsewhere, so we don’t feel that we need to add to the pile.

NonBinary Review is a quarterly digital literary journal that joins poetry, fiction, essays, and art around each issue's theme. We invite authors and artists to explore each theme in any way that speaks to them: re-imagine a  familiar story from a new point of view, mash genres together, give us a personal insight into some aspect of our theme that has haunted you all  your life. All submissions must have a clear and obvious relationship to our theme. Submissions with no clear relationship to the theme will be rejected. Although you may submit more than once, we can only accept ONE piece per author/artist per issue.

VISUAL ART
You may submit up to 5 pieces. You must include an artist's statement that includes the date of creation for the piece(s), size, media, and some commentary about its relation to the theme. Files should be print quality (300 dpi or better) and of a size that will present well in our 8.5" x 11" trim size. To submit poetry or prose for consideration, click here.

ALL SUBMISSIONS
Your 50-word bio should be included in your cover letter. If your bio is longer than 50 words, it WILL be edited for length if your piece is selected. You may submit more than one piece, but each piece must be  submitted as a separate document. A high-quality headshot (preferably not a selfie or out-of-focus photo) should also accompany your submission, although if you prefer not to include a photo of yourself, you may include any image you feel is emblematic of you.

PAYMENT
NonBinary Review pays $25 for visual art, or $50 for art selected as cover image. NonBinary Review accepts previously published work as long as the original publication is clearly credited. All contributors will receive a complimentary .pdf copy of the issue in which their work appears.

All work may be edited for typos and punctuation

We use Submittable to accept and review our submissions.
