We are open to submissions which relate to SHARED WORLDS.
We all have those books from childhood that resonated with us. Worlds where we felt at home with characters who felt like real friends. For this issue, we’re looking for works from your favorite alternative worlds: Narnia, Discworld, Dune, Wonderland — but there’s a catch. We DON’T want characters we’ve heard of – we’re not looking for Jack, the Pumpkin King or Toad of Toad Hall. We’re looking for more. The life you would have lived in Middle Earth. The adventure you went on in Westeros. Your experience of being Sherlock Holmes’s next door neighbor.
All works should be based in a well-established fictional world and should obey that world’s rules and customs, and we should be able to recognize that world from your work. Works may NOT be based around major characters or previously published stories from those worlds, although they may be mentioned.
NonBinary Review is a quarterly digital literary journal that joins poetry, fiction, essays, and art around each issue's theme. We invite authors and artists to explore each theme in any way that speaks to them: re-imagine a familiar story from a new point of view, mash genres together, give us a personal insight into some aspect of our theme that has haunted you all your life. All submissions must have a clear and obvious relationship to our theme. Submissions with no clear relationship to the theme will be rejected. Although you may submit more than once, we can only accept ONE piece per author/artist per issue.
You may submit up to 5 pieces. You must include an artist's statement that includes the date of creation for the piece(s), size, media, and some commentary about its relation to the theme. Files should be print quality (300 dpi or better) and of a size that will present well in our 8.5" x 11" trim size. To submit poetry or prose for consideration, click here.
Your 50-word bio should be included in your cover letter. If your bio is longer than 50 words, it WILL be edited for length if your piece is selected. You may submit more than one piece, but each piece must be submitted as a separate document. A high-quality headshot (preferably not a selfie or out-of-focus photo) should also accompany your submission, although if you prefer not to include a photo of yourself, you may include any image you feel is emblematic of you.
NonBinary Review pays $25 for visual art, or $50 for art selected as cover image. NonBinary Review accepts previously published work as long as the original publication is clearly credited. All contributors will receive a complimentary .pdf copy of the issue in which their work appears.
If you are interested in your work appearing in our podcast, indicate in your submission that you are willing to appear in Alphanumeric. Pieces chosen for Alphanumeric will be recorded and be featured on our website as well as being included in the issue. Pieces chosen for Alphanumeric will not receive any additional compensation. All contributors will receive a complimentary .pdf copy of the issue in which their work appears.
All work may be edited for typos and punctuation.
